DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIV 1 AND HIV 2 Patients who have HIV-2 infection have a positive rapid screen but an undetectable HIV-1 RNA RT-PCR. This patient had HIV-2 infection that was discovered with an HIV-1/HIV-2 antibody differentiation immunoassay test. This finding demonstrated that the patient was HIV-1 seronegative and HIV-2 seropositive. Patients who are infected with HIV-2 typically present with higher CD4 cell counts than patients with HIV-1. Patients with HIV-2 infection have a lower viral load than patients with HIV-1 infection.
