Many patients come to consult me a very late stage when their cd4 counts have dropped below 200. they already have one or more oppertunistic infection. The risk of getting oppertunistic infections is reducued if you start hiv treatment early. Most patients delay treatment because of the fear that their hiv status might be revealed (we always keep it confidential )if they come to a health care centre. There are different hiv drugs varying fro single pill to 2 to 3 pills per day. The side effects vary from drug to drug. we choose the regimen depending on the age of the patient the underlying comorbid conditions like diabetes and other renal and liver problems and pregnacy. More often patient takes medicines continuously without monitoring which leads to drug side effects in many patients. Many patients fail the drug and are not aware of it and end up getting many oppertunistic infection even wheN they are on hiv treatment because they do not monitor their treatment . Posted just now
