WHAT IS PRE EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS For the first time, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is recommending pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for people at risk for acquiring HIV. The grade A draft recommendation applies to the following high-risk groups: Men who have sex with men, are sexually active, and have one of the following: an HIV-infected partner; recent syphilis, gonorrhea, or chlamydia infection; or inconsistent condom use during anal sex. Sexually active heterosexual people who have one of the following: a serodiscordant sex partner; inconsistent condom use during sex with a high-risk partner of unknown HIV status; or recent syphilis or gonorrhea infection. People who inject drugs who either share injection paraphernalia or engage in risky sexual activity.
